Teuli Moja’s Founder and CEO Doyin Richards just heard the most wonderful news of his life: His wife is pregnant with their first child. Any good parent-to-be spends time daydreaming about what his/her kid will look like and what type of personality the child will have, but Doyin took it one step further. During his quiet moments he would stare out into space wondering how his future daughter will make the world a better place for everyone.
Since it will be a few months before his kid makes her grand entrance into the world, Doyin focused his energy on studying his 22-month old niece. He noticed that she can be stubborn at times and must have things done her way. One particular afternoon Doyin heard her father say, “This kid is going to be a great leader…I just can’t see her taking orders from anyone.” Then came Doyin’s first light bulb moment.
He took out a pencil and started doodling a stick-figure drawing of a girl wearing a crown with the caption “Shot Caller” underneath it. A few days later Doyin put the design on a toddler T-shirt and gave it to his niece. She wears it proudly, and people stop her and her parents on the street to comment on how cute she is in the shirt. One woman in particular said, “When she grows up to be a ‘Shot Caller’ you can show her a picture wearing this T-shirt to prove that this is how it all began.” Then came Doyin’s second light bulb moment.
He realized that there are probably thousands of other parents, grandparents, Aunts, Uncles, etc. out there who believe in the greatness of young children. Would they be interested in messages like this?
In the months that followed, Doyin created over 100 original designs for children between the ages of 2 – 4 that focused on the uniqueness, creativity, and most importantly, the greatness inherent within them. Those designs combined with his father’s 30+ years of silk-screening and clothing expertise helped form a Clothing & Accessories company known as Teuli Moja (pronounced Tway-Lee Moe-jah) which means “chosen one.”
